New Headteacher Leads Moor End Technology College Team to Ofsted Success!
Headteacher Jane Acklam, the staff, students and governors of Moor End Technology College were delighted with the glowing commendation received from the Ofsted inspection on the 13 th November 2006, which graded the school as ‘good with outstanding features’. This judgement represents the best Ofsted report in the school’s history and is one of the most positive reports in Kirklees which the inspectors felt endorsed the school’s motto: ‘enjoy and achieve; every day matters’. They were very much impressed by the school’s very strong ethos’ which ‘is consistently in evidence through the smiling faces of most pupils as they demonstrate sheer enjoyment in their day-to-day life’.
Out of a total of 22 categories looking at the school’s overall effectiveness, achievement and standards, personal development and well-being of students, the quality of provision, and leadership and management, the school received 10 ‘outstanding’ judgements.
Of particular merit was the way in which the school was judged to look after its students, particularly in response to meeting their individual needs. In the section ‘Personal development and well-being’, Moor End was recognised as being ‘outstanding’ in its care, guidance and support of all students, enabling them to make the right choices, academically and in terms of lifestyle choices. As the year 9 pupils interviewed stated: ‘children have a clear voice, they are treated with respect, and the happy learning atmosphere created by teachers leads us to success’. Moor End students are justifiably proud of their school and were complimented by the Ofsted team for being ‘confident, considerate young adults’ with positive attitudes towards learning and having ‘excellent relationships with each other and adults in the school’, willing to take on additional responsibilities such as helping younger pupils through peer mentoring and playing an important role in shaping their school through ‘Student Voice’. They behave well and attendance is above average.
A testament to the work of all staff and parents is the progress made by students, ‘many of whom enter the school with standards that are well below average…but by the end of Year 9, as a result of excellent teaching and very well focused support, pupils begin their GCSE courses with a firm foundation’ and ‘the vast majority of these students choose to continue with their education and are well-equipped to do so’. Inspection evidence confirmed that pupils’ achievement as they move through school is good, and for some students achievement is ‘exceptional’. The pupils themselves appreciated knowing how well they are doing and the regular advice given by teachers to help them to understand what they need to do to improve.
In terms of teaching and learning, lessons were regarded as ‘stimulating’ and challenging for a wide range of abilities. There is an extensive and increasing range of choice in the curriculum complemented by ‘numerous extra-curricular activities’.
The headteacher herself was awarded an ‘outstanding’ for her leadership and management of the school, her vision clearly focused on further improving standards which will ensure that the school continues to build upon this undoubted success in the future.
